Inside the Studio

Playing in the mud

Every piece we create begins as a piece of moist clay.  We primarily use cone 6 stoneware, for its durability and versatility.

All pieces are hand thrown on a wheel or created through a hand building process.

Adding details

After throwing and drying the piece to a leather hard stage, details can be added by carving, attaching handles or decorative toppers (because of our love of furry beasts, handles are usually in the shape of animals!). After it dries, it goes for the first round of firing in the kiln.

Painting and glazing

Now that the piece has been bisque-fired, it can be painted and glazed.  It is then fired again, to a higher temperature.

The final heat is on

The glaze, whether it has painting beneath or not, requires a final firing in the kiln.

We use mid range firing temperatures, hot enough for the clay itself to vitrify.  This creates a durable and functional product.

The moment of truth

It is always exciting to open the kiln after a glaze firing, to see the final result of weeks of work!  So many things can happen at those high temperatures, and there is a lot of serendipity in exactly how glazes melt and vitrify.
